Slow Food “Snail of Approval” in NYC

It hasn’t got shiny metal statues to give away, but the Snail of Approval program designed by The Slow Food New York City (SFNYC) Steering Committee carries some weight. Its reward is a snail sticker given by the Committee, to “producers, purveyors and artisans who contribute to the Quality, Authenticity and Sustainability of the food we eat and the beverages we drink in the City of New York.”

Nominations for the Snail of Approval are accepted by any Slow Food member, but must apply to a NYC establishment. The nominations are vetted by the SFNYC Steering Committee.

Slow Food International prohibits businesses from using the Slow Food snail or association with Slow Food for marketing purposes. The Snail of Approval program puts the Snail symbol to work for the cause – Good, Clean and Fair food and beverages – not for individual businesses. Still, it is easy to imagine a kind of snail trail forming, as consumers scan windows and web sites for the reassuring swirl.
