Local, Slow Food Calgary

Wild Rice: Heaven in a Prairie Grain

When the quaking aspens are weeping gold, and the grains of wild rice blacken in their ruddy husk, prairie harvest has arrived. Here in Alberta, we think first and foremost of wheat when we think of harvest, but on the prairie, wild rice is the original North American grain crop. Not a rice, but a tall grass, this elongated black kernel is elegant and eloquent. Even its name sings. Zizania aquatica grows where the Precambrian Shield wraps its rocky arms around the grassland, where lakes are encased in the sleeve of glacial rock. Walk to the edge of a lake rich in wild rice, and you may not even see the water’s edge until your boot toes nudge the mud.

A Summer Picnic with the Cooks of Terra Madre

Location: Highwood Crossing Farm (near Aldersyde)
Members: Adult, $35; Family of 4, $80; Children 8 – 15, $10
Non-members: Adult, $45; Family of 4, $100; Children 8 – 15, $10

Terra Madre is an international gathering of cooks and food purveyors who share a commitment to local, good, clean and fair food. Slow Food Calgary was proud to be represented in Turino, Italy, 2006, by six fine local cooks, and our hosts Tony and Penny Marshall of Highwood Crossing Farm.

• The Cooks of Terra Madre will prepare a sumptuous BBQ feast
• A guided river walk with local author Bruce Masterman
• Herb walk with master herbalist Blaine Andrusek
• Cash bar – local brew and a selection of Canadian wines

Maps will be supplied upon registration.
